A morning of rain and memory-making
On Sunday, February 17th, we gathered with a diverse group of travelers—students, educators, community leaders, survivors of the Japanese American incarceration, family, and friends—for YMP’s annual “Day of Remembrance” memory bus ride through Fresno, CA. Together, we braved the cold rains, visiting the Fresno Assembly Center Memorial, Fresno’s Chinatown/historic Japantown, and the Soul-Consoling Tower at Simonian Farms. “I am so glad I attended,” noted one of our bus riders. “It was not only educational but I was happy to be part of the project. I think what you are doing is extremely important for future and past generations and it can speak to people of many backgrounds.”
Amazingly, upon our return to our starting point, the Fresno Fairgrounds, the rain ceased, and the cold sunlight broke through.
YMP’s annual memory bus ride commemorates “Day of Remembrance” every February 19th. On that day, in 1942, Executive Order 9066 authorized the incarceration of the Japanese American community.
